Email + task canvas with "elimination first" philosophy, but Todoist and Hey already own this.

Strengths
  • Genuinely clever reframing: eliminate > prioritize > organize, not the reverse.
  • Side-by-side email-and-tasks board reduces tool-switching friction for specific workflows.
  • Clean sandbox demo with actual working integration (Outlook ready, Gmail planned).
Weaknesses
  • Narrow appeal: mainly resonates with GTD practitioners and power email users.
  • Lacks differentiation on core features: Kanban boards, email threading, state management exist everywhere.

Post Description

Hi HN. I built Nix It because I was tired of switching back and forth between my email client and task tracker and wanted a way to manage both uniformly. It gave me the tool I always wanted, and the process forced me to sharpen the system I use personally.

The core idea behind the system is that elimination is the highest-leverage action in any work system. Before you organize, prioritize, or schedule something, ask whether it should exist at all. My experience has shown me that important things come back naturally.

Nix It is an email client (Outlook available, Gmail planned) combined with a task management canvas. Emails and tasks live side by side as cards on a Kanban-style board. Conceptually, everything flows through three stages: filter what enters, distill what remains by controlling visibility with states and time-based triggers, and eliminate aggressively. The goal is to keep your system as close to empty as possible.

I built it using SvelteKit and Convex. Happy to talk about the build, the philosophy, or why I think most productivity tools make the problem worse.
