Thoughtful UX design solving the 'can't read yet' interface challenge.

Strengths
  • Audio narration allows completely non-literate users to play independently.
  • Difficulty scaling from well-known flags to obscure ones keeps it engaging.
Weaknesses
  • Extremely narrow scope limits long-term engagement beyond the novelty.
  • Lacks progression tracking or spaced repetition for actual learning.

Post Description

Ever since the World Cup had started, our five-year-old has been completely obsessed with country flags. So I built him a small app to practice.

The first version was a 5-minute hack with Claude on my phone. Then came his feature requests (“I want Lamine Yamal to congratulate me when I get it right!”) — that paired well with my fascination for building browser games. And I realised that there’s an interesting UX challenge here: How do you design an interface for someone who can’t read yet?

So the one-off turned into a real game, which I’m now happy to share with others, beyond my initial target audience of one.
