place-clone – A nostalgic revisiting of r/place

AI Analysis

MidCozyShip It

Yet another r/place clone, but the free-tier hosting stack is clever.

Strengths
  • Free-tier architecture (Neocities + Render + Firebase) keeps costs at zero.
  • Bot detection with fingerprinting and behavior analysis included.
  • Admin panel with moderation tools and log export for community management.
Weaknesses
  • Alpha stage with rough edges; author admits it's a hobby project.
  • r/place clones already exist; no novel differentiation beyond hosting.

Post Description

Hi HN.

*Tl;dr*: An attempt was made to build a remake of the original r/place. The repo is now public, and I'd love feedback, contributions, and the like. Demo (very much alpha) is here: https://chabes.neocities.org/place/

This is a hobby project I have been playing with for a few days. It is an llm-assisted attempt at a nostalgic clone of the 2017 April Fools (9 years ago today) reddit experiment r/place[1][2]. My intention is to have a working version by the 10 year anniversary coming up a year from today.

A demo can be interacted with here: https://chabes.neocities.org/place/

I don't expect this to get huge traction on HN, but please don't hug to death, regardless. It is semi-functional, but very rough around the edges.

That's basically it. Try the demo. Repo is open for contributions. Let me know if you have any questions!

A Telegram bot to get homework reminders from Canvas

Integrates your Canvas account with a Telegram bot that notifies you only about unfinished assignments and stops reminders after submission — you can find your university by name and it syncs continuously. Tokens are encrypted with Google Cloud KMS and the code is open-source, which is a sensible, trust-forward approach for a tool that needs LMS credentials; practical and likely to be useful to students, but not a novel category.
