Living internet history museum running on custom open-source Amsterdam forum software.

Strengths
  • Preserves original 2001-2006 discussions that would otherwise be lost forever.
  • Amsterdam software is open source, allowing anyone to self-host similar community structures.
  • Forum structure prioritizes human-scale interaction rather than engagement-maximizing algorithms.
Weaknesses
  • Forum software category is crowded with more feature-rich modern alternatives.
  • Niche appeal likely limits growth beyond internet history enthusiasts.

Post Description

In 2001 Electric Minds was shut down by its then-owners. We, the community, raised money for a server, rebuilt it on software I wrote, and kept it alive for years.

I've now brought it back to life, complete with original discussions from 2001-2006, on a new software platform, the Amsterdam Web Communities System.

This is part history, part rebuild, and part experiment: can human-scale online communities still work today?
