Finally test slow 3G on iPhone without tethering to a Mac.

Strengths
  • System-wide throttling via local VPN means zero data leaves your device.
  • Removes Mac and Xcode dependency for testing network conditions in the wild.
  • Custom bandwidth profiles let you simulate specific edge cases like hotel Wi-Fi.
Weaknesses
  • $0.99 price point compared to free Xcode Network Link Conditioner for Mac.
  • iOS NetworkExtension API limits granular packet-level control compared to hardware tools.

Post Description

Hey HN,

I just released a small iOS and iPadOS app called Internet Speed Limiter. It lets you slow down your device's entire internet connection directly on the phone or iPad. No Mac required, no Xcode Network Link Conditioner, no proxies or complicated setup.

Most of us test apps on fast Wi-Fi or strong cellular, but actual users often face slow 3G, weak signals, or bad hotel networks. This app lets you reproduce those conditions right where you are developing. You choose a profile like Slow, Medium and Fast or set your own bandwidth. Flip the switch and everything on the device, your app, Safari, whatever, starts feeling the throttle. It works through a local VPN profile so it affects the whole system.

You can find it on the App Store here: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/internet-speed-limiter/id67601... I would love to hear questions, feedback and/or feature requests. If you give it a try and something works great or breaks badly, tell me. I am around to chat.

Thanks for reading! Jay

GridCalc, an RPN Spreadsheet for iOS

The core idea is neat: put an RPN stack into a spreadsheet-like grid so you get both terse, stepwise entry and immediate dependency updates when you change an input. That combo feels like a thoughtful mobile-first answer to cramped phone spreadsheets. Main caveats: it's niche (RPN devotees) and the demo page gives little evidence about export, collaboration, or how complex formulas are expressed.
